In addition to the article Mind-Body Medicine Completes Sports Medicine (Erbeldinger, R. 2025, published in THE MIND Bulletin on Mind-Body Medicine Research, 7, 23-30), we would like to take this opportunity to present our definition of the increasingly important term “prehabilitation” (prehab) in order to provide you with some guidance:
Prehabilitation (Prehab) during the first medical encounter / visit is a proactive and individualized approach that prepares each patient (non-patient) for anticipated stressors, but also for unexpected events and functional impairments related to pending treatments (in this context, Motivational Interviewing proves to be an appropriate method, which can subsequently be transferred into the setting of Shared Medical Appointments to enhance both effectiveness and cost-efficiency). It is tailored to personal needs, conditions, requirements and capacities, and is applied independently of whether the therapeutic pathway involves surgery or non-surgical interventions.
Furthermore a structured, individualized prophylaxis can evolve in non-patients through regular screenings, as exemplified by dental care. This approach not only maintains health but also co-develops with the adaptive immune system along the lifespan, enabling specific protective responses to emerge and strengthen over time.
